Over 140 industry professionals from 20 different countries attended the Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) workshop at the ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium (DBS) this year. On the agenda was hybrid radio, the business case for implementing DAB+, the benefits of DAB+ in smartphones, as well as the overall progress of DAB+ in the Asia-Pacific region.

Commercial Radio Australia’s Joan Warner said "radio is the most robust and reliable communications channel. It’s free, accessible and innovative, and now it is also digital. DAB+ is becoming the most popular digital radio standard around the world.” She also spoke about the LG Stylus smartphone, which is the world’s first DAB+ phone. “It has become LG’s top selling phone in Australia. The smartphone can receive all radio stations free to air via DAB+ and there are no streaming costs for the listeners.”

The Media Council of the Sächsische Landesanstalt für Privat Rundfunk und neue Medien (SLM) has cleared the way for the first complete local radio multiplexes via DAB+. SLM has given the green light for a DAB+ tender in Leipzig and in Freiberg.

Titled “DAB+ expansion in Asia Pacific,” the WorldDAB workshop also featured three breakout sessions, during which delegates discussed key aspects of DAB+ rollout: regulation, technology and developing new content.
