European governments set out digital vision for radio at WorldDAB General Assembly

Government Ministers, broadcasters, regulators and technology vendors gathered today in Vienna to set out their vision for the future of digital radio. Political and regulatory representatives from Germany, France, Norway, United Kingdom and Slovakia were joined by the European Commission in discussing the future of digital radio and the adoption of DAB across key markets.

Kid Jensen and Pat Sharp join UKRD DAB station

David Jensen and Pat Sharp are among the presenting line-up for commercial radio operator UKRD’s new digital service, My Music Radio, launching today. The service replaces the ‘Oldies’ branded stations on DAB multiplexes in Surrey, Cornwall and North Yorkshire and will also be added to the small-scale multiplex in Cambridge, which is run by UKRD.

Christmas radio stations planned for the UK

EBU Head of Radio Graham Dixon asks 'Who are the Gatekeepers?'

Speaking at the WorldDAB General Assembly – a gathering for everyone involved in digital radio from broadcasters to manufacturers and regulators – Dixon encouraged the group to reflect on information sources in the 21st Century. Seeking out other gatekeepers, Dixon noted that remaining exclusively in the FM domain also constituted a gatekeeper, however balanced the conventional radio output. By restricting the number of channels available, it inevitably blocked – in a passive aggressive manner - the launch of new services and the further plurality of voices which DAB can provide.

Broadcast tech continues to evolve in Switzerland

Since 2012, SRG has been broadcasting nine of its radio programmes using both DAB and DAB+. DAB transmission will come to an end on the 15th of November and will be replaced with DAB+. SRG has given listeners four years to make the transition. Some older DAB radios can be given further life with use of a DAB+ adapter.
