A new consumer marketing campaign for digital radio has been launched in North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous state. The campaign will raise awareness of the radio technology of the future, draw attention to the variety of digital radio programs available and provide information on the ease of use of digital radio devices.

A joint report commissioned by the Bavarian Regulatory Authority for Commercial Broadcasting (BLM) and the Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) on the future of terrestrial radio coverage in Bavaria comes to the conclusion a digital terrestrial radio supply is economically feasible only on DAB+.

Warnings about flood, extreme weather, chemical spills and other imminent dangers can be broadcast immediately and reliably via digital radio in the future.

The Digital Radio Summit 2014 will take place on 11 March. An open invitation was made to broadcasters in Germany and neighbouring countries to discuss the key issues of digital radio development.

The next phase of the BBC’s digital radio network expansion plan will bring a further 2 million people into the coverage area with an additional 162 transmitters. This will extend and improve coverage of the BBC’s national radio stations on DAB from 93% to 97% of the UK population by the end of 2015.

The Dutch Public Broadcasting (NPO) company has completed phase two of the rollout of its DAB+ network according to radio.nl, by turning on the last transmitter in Groningen.

Proposals to build the new antenna on Windmill Hill in Hutton have been submitted to the council by broadcasting company Arqiva. If the electronic communications apparatus is installed at the transmitting station, it means digital audio broadcasting (DAB) will be improved.

“Broadcast radio is still the backbone of radio in Australia and will be for some time,” CRA’s Joan Warner told delegates in Kuala Lumpur. “Apps and streaming cannot take the place of free to air broadcast radio but they do offer us an opportunity to connect in more ways with our listeners.”
