A consultation with the aim of including community radio stations on the DAB platform has been launched today by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport. The Government will now consult on the best approach for a licensing process that is appropriate for small-scale DAB radio multiplexes, with the aim of having a new licensing arrangements in place by the end of the year. The consultation will run for 8 weeks, and closes on the 28 February 2018.

The Italian Government has passed legislation (Article 1044) aimed at encouraging technological innovation in the digital radio sector starting from 2019. The law will be introduced in two stages: from 1 June 2019, all radio devices sold by manufacturers to distributors would be integrated with at least one interface enabling digital radio services. The second stage from 1 January 2020 will require all devices sold to consumers and the automotive industry to be capable of receiving digital radio.

The DAB+ network of the commercial national radio stations in the Netherlands, united under the Commercial Radio Association (VCR), has been expanded to cover 97 percent. The network expansion not only ensures greater coverage, but also better interior reception.

Parts of the Randstad in the coming period will receive a moderate reception of commercial radio stations via DAB+. According to the VCR, the upgraded signal from the national commercial radio stations on DAB+ is now so good that the programs can be received in almost the entire country (> 97%).

In order to accelerate the development of DAB+, the CSA draws the lessons of a first assessment after having solicited views through a public consultation. The findings presented include launches during July 2018 and July 2019 to boost DAB+ services in France.
