The increasing uptake of DAB+ digital radio reflects the buoyant economies in Eastern Europe, and DAB+ was high on the agenda at MBT 2018 with a dedicated session on digital radio and several DAB+ equipment providers showcasing their products and services in the exhibition.

During the event, KRRiT Chairman, Witold Kołodziejski explained that the organization was looking at the implementation of DAB+ technology in order to compensate for the country’s lack of available analogue frequencies.

As digital listening is growing faster than anticipated, there is a possibility that FM may be switched off by 2021, which would be a change to the original plan of switch off in phases between 2020 and 2024. A decision on whether FM will be switched off by 2021 is expected to be made by in the autumn of 2019.

Representatives of Polish radio stations discussed the potential transition to broadcasting in DAB+ during a conference held on Monday to discuss the country's radio future, with 47 frequencies to be distributed to 34 cities. KRRiT chairman Witold Kołodziejski said that the organisation was considering DAB+ as the sole successor to FM in Poland, as analogue frequencies were now exhausted.

34 Polish cities have been nominated to launch DAB+ multiplexes, with each one to enable a maximum of 12 stations.

In the UK, Sound Digital's commercial DAB multiplex coverage area will reach an additional four million people following a new agreement with Arqiva. In Lille, DAB+ broadcasts will begin on 19 June.
