Public consultation

In November 2020, a public consultation regarding the launch of regular DAB+ services in Slovakia was published by the Slovakian regulatory authority. A summary of this consultation is available here (in Slovakian).

As part of the consultation, key public and private broadcasters as well as telecoms operators from Slovakia indicated that there is both interest and potential for the launch of regular national DAB+ services in Slovakia.

The conclusion of the regulatory authority in regards to the consultation was that regular nationwide DAB+ services will be launched in Slovakia as soon as possible, with the exact timing still to be confirmed.

 

DAB+ trials

DAB+ broadcasting in Slovakia started on 15 December 2015 as a trial in the capital city Bratislava. This trial is operated by the company Towercom, the biggest Slovakian broadcasting network operator.

Currently 10 transmitters are in operation, operated by Towercom (MUX 1) and AVIS (MUX2). On trials both public (RTVS) and commercial programme services are transmitted.

Rádio Mária (simulcast FM / DAB+/ Internet) is a catholic radio station.

Rádio Lumen (simulcast FM / DAB+/ Internet) is a Christian radio station.

Rádio Junior is a solely digital station, available exclusively via DAB+ and Internet, featuring specialised children’s content.

Rádio Pyramida is a solely digital station, available exclusively via DAB+ and Internet, broadcasts to listeners the most important recordings from the rich archive. The motto became the words "history written in sound".

Rádio Litera is a solely digital station, available exclusively via DAB+ and Internet, aimed to more intellectual listeners.

Radio Rock (simulcast FM / DAB+/ Internet) is a station focused on rock music.

DAB+ trials

DAB+ broadcasting in Slovakia started on 15 December 2015 as a trial in the capital city Bratislava. This trial is operated by the company Towercom, the biggest Slovakian broadcasting network operator.

Currently 10 transmitters (see below transmitter sites) are in operation, operated by Towercom (MUX 1) and AVIS Ltd. (MUX 2). On trials both public (RTVS) and commercial programme services are transmitted.

For all transmitters, vertical polarisation and DQPSK modulation is permitted.

First Towercom's trial in Bratislava was put into operation on 15 December 2015.

In January 2017 the Slovak Government approved the Strategy of Implementation of Terrestrial Digital Audio Broadcasting in the Slovak Republic. According to this document, the migration from analogue to digital broadcasting is divided to three phases (with defined terms).

Public consultation

The Research Institute of Post and Telecommunications (VÚS) conducted a project dealing with emergency warning via digital radio (EWF). The project was successfully finished in December 2018, with the test transmission in Banská Bystrica. The aim was to utilize new features of digital radio and to design an additional method of disseminating warning messages to population and thus increase the likelihood that residents will be adequately informed in critical situations.

RTVS expands DAB+ coverage of Slovakia

RTVS in cooperation with the service supplier Towercom a.s. extends the coverage of the territory and population of Slovakia with the digital radio broadcasting signal in the T-DAB+ standard. From 13 October, listeners can also listen to all RTVS Slovak Radio's programme services via the new T-DAB+ transmitter in Považská Bystrica, on transmission channel 8A. The radiated power of the transmitter will be 1.8 kW and will serve listeners in Považská Bystrica and the surrounding area. RTVS is thus continuing its efforts to gradually cover the Bratislava - Žilina motorway link as well as other sections of motorways and expressways in Slovakia with the T-DAB+ signal.

DAB+ signal to be significantly improved in Záhorie

The radiated power of digital radio broadcasting (DAB+) on the transmitter Borský Mikuláš - Dubník, which distributes the signal on channel 6D (187.072 MHz), will be doubled on 19 July 2023. This is the second power increase of the DAB+ transmitter in Slovakia this month. At the beginning of the month, the power was increased at the transmitter Banská Bystrica - Laskomer. The improvement of DAB+ coverage is based on the requirements of RTVS.

RTVS expands DAB+ coverage

RTVS in cooperation with the service supplier Towercom a.s. extends the coverage of the territory and population of Slovakia with the digital radio broadcasting signal in the T-DAB+ standard. A new location Prievidza will be added. From 1 July, listeners will be able to listen to all RTVS Slovak Radio programme services via the new T-DAB+ transmitter in Prievidza. The radiated power of the transmitter will be 700 W and it will serve listeners in the locality of Prievidza - Bojnice and surroundings.

RTVS wants to launch more transmitters

RTVS technical director Roman Skřívánek spoke on Wednesday's edition of the programme "Contacts" on Radio Slovakia about the public broadcaster's plans for DAB+ technology. "We are in intensive negotiations to increase the power of the Žilina and Krížava transmitters and to launch two more transmitters, Ružomberok - Úložisko and Poprad - Hranovnica," said Skřivánek. As the public broadcaster is not able to measure the popularity of digital radio listening at the moment, it plans to focus on the motorway section between Bratislava and Košice for further coverage. "With this we would like to get slightly over 65% of the population coverage," he added.

Digital radio in Slovakia delayed by frequency clearances and war in Ukraine

The regulator has not yet reached an agreement with neighbouring countries and has not been able to finalise suitable frequencies over which digital radio networks could be launched. The representative of the State Office states that the situation has also been complicated by the war in its eastern neighbours, and the process is not complete with other countries either. Without this, the state is not yet able to hold an auction for those interested in operating digital DAB+ networks.

RTVS to launch DAB+ campaign in Slovakia

Along with the launch of the new DAB+ transmitter Borský Mikuláš, which reaches Moravia with its signal, the Slovak public broadcaster is also planning to promote this technology among the public, according to the Digital Radio portal. The campaign will be launched in week 15 and will include radio and TV spots. The radio spots will be available on all RTVS radio stations from 11 April. A DAB+ spot promoting "čisté rádio" [pure radio] will be deployed on all the public broadcaster's TV channels at random intervals - depending on the advertising space.

DAB+ digital radio improves coverage in Slovakia

Towercom, in cooperation with the public broadcaster, has expanded the availability of DAB+ digital radio. Borský Mikuláš has been added to the existing transmitters in Bratislava, Košice, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Nitra, Trenčín, Rimavská Sobota and Dunajská Streda. "The Borský Mikuláš - Šaštín Stráže transmitter will cover the Záhorie region, including the D2 motorway between Bratislava - Brno and the Czech border," said RTVS. "With the launch of the Borský Mikuláš transmitter, the T-DAB+ signal coverage of the Slovak population will exceed 60 per cent, with simultaneous coverage of all regional towns."

DAB+ in Slovakia: How was 2023 and what can we expect in the new year 2024?

Let's review the changes in digital radio broadcasting in Slovakia in 2023. In total, three new DAB+ transmitters were put into operation, namely Považská Bystrica - Rozkvet (8A/ 195.936 MHz), Košice - Dubník (10C/213.360 MHz) and Borský Mikuláš - Dubník (6D/187.072 MHz). On the contrary, the transmitter in Dunajská Streda was switched off. Subsequently, the whole technology was moved to Bojnice (TVP Prievidza), where the operator could launch a low-power transmitter for Bojnice itself, as well as for Prievidza and its surroundings. Dunajská Streda did not lose its DAB+ signal, it is sufficiently covered by Bratislava's Kamzík and partly also by Nitra's Zobor. Three of these transmitters are operated directly by Towercom and one by its subsidiary AVIS.

Digital radio to expand with new Borski Mikulas transmitter

Towercom is planning to increase its digital radio coverage with a new transmitter. The company expects DAB+ coverage to increase to around 70 per cent of the population this year. "During the first half of 2023 we plan to launch the transmitter in Borski Mikulas," a Towercom representative told Živé.sk. The network mainly broadcasts RTVS stations or the Rádio Rock circuit. With digital radio, the frequency band is used more efficiently and the cost of disseminating one programme service is also reduced compared to FM broadcasting.

RÚ extends DAB+ licences in Slovakia

The existing licences for DAB+ digital radio transmitters operated by Towercom expired at the end of 2022. "The operator of digital terrestrial radio broadcasting has applied to the Office for the Regulation of Electronic Communications and Postal Services (RÚ) for an extension of the validity period of 10 individual licences for the use of frequencies," Adriana Volfová, head of the press and information department at the RÚ, told SatelitnáTV.sk. "In November 2022, the Office decided to extend the validity period of these individual authorisations." All new licences are valid until the end of 2023.
