The announcement of FM switch off in 2017 means that a solution for in-car digital radio will be needed not only in new cars, but also as retro-fit products in the cars that already on the road. Currently, 66% of new cars now come fitted with DAB radio.

Norway's top selling car-brand, VW, has a DAB attachment ratio of well over 90%. Out of the top 20 selling car-models, 18 offer DAB as line fit (standard or optional).

With relatively short time to FM shut-down, the main in-car focus is on the market for adaptors and retro-fit digital radios, to ensure these are as widely available as possible. There are in total approx. 3 mill cars in Norway, and over 10% of these have a DAB-radio.

The proposed strategy is to install DAB-radios into as many cars as possible before the FM shutdown, making adaptors available through traditional and non-traditional car accessory sales channels. A key element in the strategy is to establish a routine in workshops offering periodical vehicle-controls, to also offer DAB-adaptor installation at the same time.

With relatively short time to FM shut-down, the main in-car focus is on the market for adaptors and retro-fit digital radios, to ensure these are as widely available as possible. There are in total approx. 3 mill cars in Norway, and just over 300,000 of these have a DAB-radio.

The strategy to install DAB-radios into as many cars as possible before FM shutdown, is to make adaptors available not only in traditional car-accessory sales channels, but in all routes that somehow handles cars. This means all workshops, tire-exchange workshops, windshield exchangers, gas-stations, long-term car parking etc. A key element in the strategy is to establish a routine in workshops offering periodical vehicle-controls, to also offer DAB-adaptor installation at the same time.
