Denmark - Current situation - History

In research recently published it was shown that 34% of the 2.5M Danish households has one or more than one DAB Digital Radio. The sales of digital radios in Denmark are estimated to be 225,000 in 2009 after a year of financial crises and a year where the Danish market went from analogue TV to digital which means huge focus on and investment in digital TV apps. The outdoor coverage in Denmark has reached more than 90% and indoor coverage is 95%. In June 2009 it was agreed by the Danish government that in a supplementary agreement to the media political agreement for 2007-2010 - the future of radio is digital. The government will drop the re-planning of the FM network, and instead rely completely on DAB. Also agreed; Commercial stations would be offered the opportunity through a beauty contest to transmit on MUX 2 and there will be lower transmission costs for DAB, the network would be expanded with a third mux for regional and local stations.Expectations for 2010 and 2011 are positive. The Danish politicians made it clear in June 2009, that Denmark will support and develop programming within DAB and in a few years DAB+. The Parliament will make a new media law to start from January 1st 2011 running for the next four year. It is expected that all radio in Denmark will go digital on DAB/DAB+ or internet. The Government will be spending EURO 1.5M in a nationwide information campaign on digital radio during 2010. Industry body, DAB Digital Radio Denmark will regroup and focus on marketing, promotion and communications on presenting 2-4 nationwide marketing campaigns during 2010 marketing DAB Digital Radio on TV, radio, magazines, websites and newspapers.

Denmark has broken through the milestone of one million receivers sold. This means that more than one million Danes over the age of 12 years have access to a DAB digital radio in their homes. This is a threefold increase in ownership compared to a year ago. The marketing continues and public broadcaster DR has recently aired a TV, radio and net campaign to support the DAB Digital Radio platform.  Outdoor coverage in Denmark has now reached over 90%.
