Australia - Receiver Market - History

The latest figures from Commercial Radio Australia show that DAB+ listening and sales of digital receivers are currently exceeding expectations.  With figures of 3 million, over 24% of people in the five state capitals where DAB+ is available, listen to radio on a DAB+ receiver.  

Sales of DAB+ receivers have now reached more than 1.7 million and with the addition of vehicles sold with a DAB+, this number exceeds 1.9 million. A range of new DAB+ products continue to enter the market; the latest is the first DAB+ radio for boats.  There are now more than 400 DAB+ digital radio devices available

Twenty one vehicle manufacturers in Australia are now including digital radio and more than 153,000 vehicles with DAB+ have been sold***.  Manufacturers in Australia that include DAB+ as standard or an option are: Toyota, Lexus, Jaguar, Ford, Mini, Mercedes Benz, Hino, Audi, BMW, Infiniti, McLaren, Nissan, Aston Martin, Land Rover, Isuzu, Lamborghini, Bentley, Porsche, Ferrari and Fuso.

All leading consumer radio brands now offer DAB+ receivers. There are now more than 260 DAB+ devices available and the average selling price continues to fall. The latest DAB+ radios include colour touch screen, slideshow and interactivity via Wi-Fi connection. CRA continues to work with chip and module makers to encourage the adoption of categorised slideshow, DL+ and other advanced features and will continue to promote radio’s new digital features to retailers, manufacturers and listeners.

Mobile phones

Many mobile phones include FM radio and radio stations have created apps to enable listeners to listen to AM, FM and DAB+ stations via mobile stream. CRA is working internationally with other broadcasters, telcos, handset manufacturers and organisations to ensure that, just as for FM, a DAB+ chip will become standard in mobile phones to enable listeners to access all stations via DAB+ free to air broadcast. Increasingly hybrid radio will offer broadcasters greater opportunities to connect with their listeners and clients in real time.

Sales of DAB+ receivers have now reached more than 1.7 million and with the addition of vehicles sold with a DAB+, this number exceeds 1.9 million. 

Twenty vehicle manufacturers in Australia are now including digital radio (up from 16 reported in August) and more than 125,000 (125,181) vehicles with DAB+ have been sold***.  Manufacturers in Australia that include DAB+ as standard or an option are: Toyota, Lexus, Jaguar, Ford, Mini, Mercedes Benz, Hino, Audi, BMW, Infiniti, McLaren, Nissan, Aston Martin, Land Rover, Isuzu, Lamborghini, Bentley, Porsche, Ferrari and Fuso.
