Broadcasters in Turkey are planning to digitise radio services. With the assistance of WorldDAB, several seminars have been organised by iTVF, the Turkish broadcast industry conference and exhibition, and with the participation of TRT, Turkish national broadcaster, RATEM (Professional Union of Broadcasting Organisations), and the regulatory body RTÜK – Radyo ve Televizyon Üst Kurulu – (Radio and Television Supreme Council).

The most awarded local radio brand in the UK has commenced its ambitious expansion plans by launching JACK and JACK 2 in Surrey and South London on DAB Digital Radio. A full launch to listeners is being planned.

It’s great news that 39.9 per cent of UK radio listening is now done via a digital device (for Bauer Media listening this rises to 53.3 per cent) – of this, DAB is the most popular, accounting for 67 per cent of all digital hours, but online listening has increased to 16 per cent of that total.

The issue shows how people continue to turn to internet radio to listen rather than using traditional FM/MW/LW analogue frequencies or the more modern DAB digital radio.

Many people point to "the future" for live, simulcast radio as being streamed online. Yet online is growing slower than DAB, and people use it less. It's also worthwhile remembering that this is not at the expense of radio listening overall. Radio is as popular as ever; but the internet is not playing the part many people believe it to.

Radio Prague’s director Miroslav Krupička says the move is good news for both Czech Radio and listeners. “The main advantage is a wider choice...The other advantage is the quality of sound. The sound is much better in digital, in DAB, in general.”
