A pioneering new technology developed by Global, the media & entertainment group, will now allow drivers radios to automatically switch between different local radio stations that are part of the same network as they travel around the country.

DAB technology seems to appeal more and more countries in Europe and elsewhere. This summer has also been marked by numerous decisions to encourage the development of this technology. While some countries are still in the testing phase, others definitely seem to have integrated DAB.

Frontier Silicon announces that its recently launched Verona 2 module now supports colour screen displays for DAB / DAB+ digital radios. The Verona 2 module, based on the company’s Kino 4 system-on-chip, has received a firmware upgrade which allows manufacturers to add colour screen capability to audio devices – using a single, integrated technology solution.

LGB&T radio station Gaydio is adding three new UK cities to its list of terrestrial broadcast areas this month. Gaydio is joining a number of small-scale DAB licence trials to boost its coverage areas, including the one launched this week in Manchester.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) had given the thumbs up to extending the DAB+ digital radio trial licences in Canberra and Darwin. Commercial Radio Australia chief executive officer Joan Warner said: “The commercial radio industry is buoyed by the support from ACMA on the extension of the Darwin and Canberra trials, and the Communications Department for the announcement of the Digital Radio Planning Committee for Regional Australia. We’re working with our industry colleagues on the planning for the first committee meeting.”

The Australian Communications and Media Authority is extending the current digital radio trials in Canberra and Darwin until 30 June 2016. The trials are being conducted by Commercial Radio Australia and use DAB+ digital radio technology. Participants in the Canberra trial include The ABC and SBS with hopes that community services will join the trial soon.

The National Public Broadcaster (NPO) has switched off NPO Radio 5 and Radio Maria from medium wave. These channels will broadcast digitally with NPO currently working to expand DAB+ network on channel 12C further with additional support channels.

Regional commercial radio in the Netherlands have begun to broadcast via DAB+ alongside existing analog services.
