The Australian Communications and Media Authority is examining proposals for expanding digital radio services in Australia. Communications Minister Mitch Fifield said that a recently established digital radio planning committee had posted ACMA with its latest recommendations for planning principles for rollout of digital radio to regional areas.

During the event Dr. Willi Steul, Head of Deutschlandradio said there is no doubt that the future for radio broadcasters is through the use of digital technology. He added that public media will drive the digitization of radio through the use of DAB.

The first major study of audio consumption in Australia has found that the entry of Pandora, Spotify and Apple Music have failed to make a dent on Australian radio’s dominance in the audio space. The study revealed Australian radio (AM, FM and DAB+) has five times the daily reach of the combined streaming services (69.7% compared to 12.4%).

CRA has joined forces with the ABC and SBS to launch the first Australian mobile app that will allow listeners to live stream more than 250 Australian radio stations. “Listening habits are evolving and RadioApp will ensure radio remains easily accessible no matter what platform or device our listeners choose to use,”said CRA chief executive officer Joan Warner.

The event will bring together regulators, broadcasters, governments and manufacturers to look at how DAB is being used in established and emerging markets around the world, reaching new audiences and delivering innovative content.

“This year's General Assembly will showcase the innovative ways DAB is being used around the world to deliver new content, reach new audiences and enable new business models,” said Patrick Hannon, President of WorldDAB.

With the theme of “New content, New markets,” the organisation has announced a trio of keynote speakers who will discuss new opportunities and different markets for digital radio. The three keynote speakers include Jimmy Buckland, director of strategy at Wireless Group; Andreas Geiss, head of unit — radio spectrum policy at the European Commission; and Patrice Gélinet from French regulator CSA.

The new Minister of State for Digital and Culture Matt Hancock has pressed the official button to activate the new DAB multiplex in Suffolk. Hancock, who is also the MP for West Suffolk, was at a special event at Ixworth CEVC Primary School near Bury St.

There's also support for Apple AirPlay, which means you'll be able to stream music from your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or iPod Touch, Plus, Naim has thrown in Google Cast support, and Internet Radio, with the added option of DAB radio on the Nova and Star.
