The National Authority for Communications Administration and Regulation (ANCOM) announced on Tuesday it is launching a public consultation to probe market interest in the allocation of spectrum available from the VHF and UHF band for DAB services in Romania, which they say provides superior sound quality and enables more efficient use of radio spectrum.

Nine new organisations have joined WorldDAB since the start of 2018, taking its membership to 104 organisations from 29 countries, including over 1,200 experts from broadcasters, regulators and network providers through to manufacturers of receivers, chips, professional equipment and automobiles.

The combined FM and digital audiences of the Hit Network and Triple M, deliver an unduplicated reach of 5,120,000. This represents an additional 360,000 listeners or an increase of 7.6% over just the analogue outlets alone. “It’s time to start talking about our digital audiences in the same breath as the rest of our stations.” says Brian Gallagher, Chief Sales Officer of SCA.

Since 2010, the turnover of radio advertising has taken off despite the competition of new digital media advertising, due to the increase in the radio audience, propelled by the increase of new DAB+ radio stations.

DAB+ Digital radio has seen audience growth for a number of years. When DAB+ launched, some networks commercialised their platforms by renting out the spectrum to retailers. In survey eight last year, the digital stations provided a a 6.5% uplift in reach and 300,000 unique listeners to its total audience.

The Flemish government has approved a proposal from minister Sven Gatz to implement a third DAB+ network, which will enable 12 new stations to be broadcast.

Northsound 2 radio station in Aberdeenwill stop broadcasting on AM1035 (780 watts) on 3 April. Owner Bauer has cited it is no longer financially viable to invest in the relocation of the AM channel.
