Q&A with Luis Grela, Managing Director at TRedess
TRedess has recently joined WorldDAB as a member, why have you joined?
TRedess is a manufacturer of TV and DAB+ Transmitters and Gap Fillers and we have already been collaborating for many years with several of the network operators forming part of WorldDAB.
Our large experience and background in the TV transmitters field (with more than 28,000 TV transmitter devices operating in 65 countries) has been a pillar for our fast growth in the DAB+ area. But it has been particularly in the last three to four years when we have really become a relevant player in many of the recent DAB+ deployments worldwide, so we considered that this was a very good moment to formally join the group and bring to the organisation all this accumulated knowledge and experience after deploying all those networks.
This will also allow us to get into deeper contact with other broadcast companies involved in DAB+ for sharing ideas, and contribute all together to the growth of DAB+ worldwide.
What market does your company support and what services do you provide?
Our portfolio of solutions includes a wide range of Air-Cooled Transmitters and Gap Fillers for DAB+ networks, as well as other necessary elements of the transmission chain such as Multiband and Multi-constellation GNSS receivers, Satellite receivers, etc.
In the last three years we have delivered more than 500 DAB+ Transmitters to more than 15 countries (Spain, France, Italy, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany, Netherlands, 'small-scale' DAB+ projects in the UK, Slovakia, Denmark, Norway, Australia, etc.)
The portfolio of solutions covers from Low power units up to Medium/High Power very high efficiency transmitters (air cooled transmitters up to 5kW with efficiencies up to 53%), plus also the most optimum echo canceller for DAB+ Gap fillers to operate in SFN scenarios, which makes it possible nowadays to install DAB+ Gap Fillers in scenarios where in the past it was almost impossible to install a repeater.
Can you tell us about your most recent projects?
Most of our recent DAB+ projects are related to new countries deploying their initial phases of DAB+ networks, starting with the coverage of main cities but specially aiming to cover motorways.
This has been combined with our participation in other projects where the objective is the renovation of some networks that had been already in operation for many years. In these cases, customers are especially looking for more energy efficient transmitters to improve the cost of operation of their networks. And in these scenarios, our latest models of transmitters with efficiencies up to 53% are already contributing to significantly improving those costs of operation.
In other well established DAB+ markets - such as Germany, for example - some customers have started to improve the network by filling in the gaps detected in the coverage. And in those scenarios, customers are seeing our TRedess SFN DAB+ Gap fillers as an excellent way for them to optimise the investment to cover those gaps.
What do your customers value most from you?
Based on the feedback we have been given by our customers, what they are valuing most from our products and solutions is:
- The high efficiency of TRedess DAB+ transmitters - in our latest models, reaching efficiency figures of 53%.
- Plus the outstanding performance of TRedess DAB+ SFN Gap Fillers, with capabilities to cancel echoes 30dB higher than the incoming signal, which makes it possible nowadays to install DAB+ Gap Fillers in complex echo scenarios.
Other main characteristics highlighted of TRedess solutions are: compact devices leading to a smaller footprint, easy operation and maintenance, our full control of the design and manufacturing process, the top-class quality control, support and flexibility, etc.
We also find that customers are nowadays paying special attention to selecting long-term reliable partners - financially stable companies - so they get the necessary support during the long life expected for the network to operate.
What advice would you give someone considering deploying DAB+?
We are all quite aware of the advantages that DAB+ brings: improvement in audio quality, more station choice and content diversity, enhanced information display, and greater efficiency in energy consumption and operating costs, leading also to minimising the associated environmental impact.
But each customer considering to deploy a DAB+ network has their own particular circumstances - existing coverage in FM, orography of the terrain, budgets, etc - so our recommendation would be for them to get closer to partners with a wide experience in this field. This means they can get the necessary support to implement their project according to their particular scenario.
And in that way, we are very willing to help customers in the testing of this technology by loaning demo units, and sharing with them our knowledge and experience in other similar project scenarios.
