Digital radio in-car continues to grow in the UK with the announcement that one third of new cars (33 .3%) now has digital radio available as standard or as an option (Q4 2012 CAP/SMMT) .Marketing of in-car digital radio has increased, with the industry campaign continuing across commercial radio, BBC TV and radio, national press and online. The heavyweight campaign, featuring digital radio evangelist D Love, is designed to spread the love for digital radio. The digital radio logo is being used in all print, media and on BBC TV. Digital Radio UK (DRUK) is working with all of the automotive brands in the UK on technical specifications for in-car receivers and an approved installer scheme which was also part of the Government criteria for a smooth transition to digital. The IMI launched an equivalent installer accreditation at the Drive 2 Digital conference in November 2012 .

A Service Following trial using the new DAB/DAB+ Service Following specification produced by the WorldDMB Technical Committee was carried out. This allowed automotive manufacturers to test Service Following on their receivers. Consumer research is carried out on a regular basis giving information to manufacturers on what the UK driver expects from their in-car digital radio experience .

• 33.3% of new vehicles have digital radio as standard (Q4 2012), up from 20.8% the previous year (Q4 2011) and 7.5% in Q4 2010 (CAP/SMMT).

35.4% of new cars now come with digital radio as standard, according to Q1 2013 CAP/SMMT data, an increase from 22.5% in Q1 2012 and from 9.9% in Q1 2011. In Q1 2013 there were 215,000 cars sold with digital radio as standard which represents 70% growth since Q1 2012.

This growth reflects a major shift in the policy of leading vehicle manufacturers who have committed to fitting digital radio as standard. In early 2013 100% of new BMW model registrations had digital radio, 81% of new VW models and 73% of new Ford models. This  follows recent news from Audi who announced that from April 2013 all their new models will have digital radio as standard.

UK new vehicle sales were at record levels in Q1 2013. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders announced registrations in Q1 rose by 7.4% to 605,198 units. The top 10 selling models in March 2013 [see table below] from SMMT show the Ford Fiesta with DAB as standard at number 1 [image below].

February 2013 government published the UK’s digital radio minimum receiver specification reports – domestic and in-vehicle. You can download the final versions of these reports here. Government is scheduled to make a decision on digital radio switchover in Q4 2013. Following a positive decision on switchover, government plans to introduce a digital radio switchover certification (“tick”) mark for use on digital receivers. These minimum receiver specifications define the technical criteria that DAB receivers must comply with to use a certification mark. These receiver specifications are a clear signal of government’s intention and enables manufacturers to plan future product development. Alongside the minimum receiver specifications, government also plans to publish reports outlining the conformance testing requirements for technology providers and receiver manufacturers. These reports will outline the level of testing required to prove compliance with the minimum receiver specifications and be published early in Q2 this year.
