DAB+ has been on air since 2016, with the launch of the first R1 national DAB+ network, operated by public broadcaster RTV Slovenia.
Currently on air are:
National multiplex: R1, carrying 16 stations
Regional multiplexes: R2 East, R2 West, carrying 24 stations
Local multiplex: R3 (Ljubljana), carrying 5 stations.

For the national R1 multiplex, portable indoor coverage is 77%, mobile outdoor coverage is 89%, with 90% of highways/motorways covered.

Planning for DAB in tunnels has been completed, with 13 tunnels of more than 500m identified.

On 15 March 2024, the Communications Networks and Services Agency of the Republic of Slovenia has published a public call for tenders for the award of the T-DAB+ national network, for the R4 and R5 multiplexes. Interested bidders may submit their bids until 19 April 2024 at 10.00. The Agency underlines that digital audio broadcasting (DAB) is the future of radio sound broadcasting. In Slovenia, there is a national network R1 and a national network R2, divided into East and West, and a regional network R3. The deployment of the DAB networks R4 and R5 will complement the current infrastructure and provide comprehensive coverage. It will provide listeners with greater convenience, quality and diversity of radio content.

Subsequently, on 5 July 2024, the Communications Networks and Services Agency of the Republic of Slovenia published a Decision on the launch of a public tender procedure for the award of 24 licences for the broadcasting of a digital radio programme throughout the territory of the Republic of Slovenia in the Official Gazette of 5 July 2024. It invites interested applicants to submit their bids by 3 September 2024. The licences are divided into two lots: eight licences will be awarded to bidders for their programmes already on analogue radio frequencies or who have already obtained digital rights for a smaller geographic area (e.g. East R2, West R2, Ljubljana area) of the total area of Slovenia; while sixteen licences will be awarded to bidders for their programmes that have not been eligible to be broadcast on analogue or digital radio.

Slovenia's R1 multiplex was filled in August 2019 with the award of licences to Radio Aktual and Radio City to broadcast on the remaining spaces available on the R1 network.  Interest was high with 11 applicants - a healthy sign ahead of the public consultation by AKOS on the tender process for a second DAB+ national network, with a public meeting held at AKOS offices on 12 September 2019.

In September 2019, Slovenia's Agency for Communication Networks and Services (Akos) launched a call for tenders for DAB+ frequencies. The contract concerns two multiplexes – R2 (national) and R3 (Ljubljana).

In December 2019 AKOS issued licenses for national mux R2 and local mux R3 (covering the capital city Ljubljana) to the public broadcaster RTV Slovenia.
