Radio Television Hong Kong formally launched its five DAB channels in 2012.  The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region reviewed the future of DAB services in Hong Kong in 2017. 

The public-service broadcaster RTHK, the only remaining broadcaster on the territory's ensemble 'DAB+ Hong Kong' ended its participation in 2017. At the end, five services were being broadcast, including one in Putonghua and a relay of BBC World Service. Three commercial broadcasters, one of which was unique to the digital platform, previously broadcast services on the ensemble but ceased in 2017.

Seven principal transmission stations and two gap-fillers were transmitting DAB+ signals over all urban and suburban areas.

Population coverage was 83%.

Regulation for digital radio in Hong Kong included using Band III. The regulator in Hong Kong is the Communications Authority.

Radio station urged to take digital route

Hong Kong Commercial Radio will have to broadcast digitally, a source said, a condition which will be included in its new license requirement. Other radio stations such as Metro Radio and RTHK are already required to go digital, according to the terms of their license.

Taxis tune into digital radio

Without a feasible distribution network, it's difficult for the station to establish itself - no matter how good the programs are. Fitting every taxi with a radio set must be costly, but it could prove very effective in expanding DBC's reach. Taxi drivers and their passengers are a "captive audience" and getting them to tune in would boost listener numbers greatly.
