Australia - Current situation - History

DAB+ launched in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in late 2009, followed by Canberra and Darwin in 2017, Hobart in April 2019 and Darwin in May 2019, as well as Canberra in July 2019 and Mandurah in December 2019.

In a news release on 21 January 2019, Commercial Radio Australia reported the latest GfK data show that people  listen to radio through multiple platforms, with significant increases in people listening online and through DAB+ digital radio, which provides access to extra stations.
 
More than 4.2 million Australians listened to radio via a DAB+ digital radio each week in 2018 (up from 3.6 million in 2017), and 2.2 million listened online on a connected device such as a mobile phone, computer or tablet (up from nearly 1.9 million). 

More than 4.73 million DAB+ radios have been sold in Australia since digital radio launched in the five major capital cities in 2009, including 2.56 million home and portable receivers and 2.17 million in new cars.

PwC projects that close to 4 million new vehicles fitted with DAB+ will be sold by the end of 2021, up from 862,426 at the end of 2016.
