UK government helping local radio switch to digital

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has launched a consultation on how best to develop a licensing process to help create a UK-wide network of DAB multiplexes, for use by about 400 local radio stations that still broadcast on analogue technology. The government is planning to create a new, community radio-focused option – dubbed the C-DSP – that offers a significantly more streamlined application and approval process. Stations holding a C-DSP licence would be eligible for funding from the Community Radio Fund and would also have access to small-scale multiplex capacity that has been ring-fenced for use by community stations.

Small Scale DAB radio consultation launched

A consultation with the aim of including community radio stations on the DAB platform has been launched today by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport. The Government will now consult on the best approach for a licensing process that is appropriate for small-scale DAB radio multiplexes, with the aim of having a new licensing arrangements in place by the end of the year. The consultation will run for 8 weeks, and closes on the 28 February 2018.

Italy passes law requiring receivers to be digitally compatible from 2020

The Italian Government has passed legislation (Article 1044) aimed at encouraging technological innovation in the digital radio sector starting from 2019. The law will be introduced in two stages: from 1 June 2019, all radio devices sold by manufacturers to distributors would be integrated with at least one interface enabling digital radio services. The second stage from 1 January 2020 will require all devices sold to consumers and the automotive industry to be capable of receiving digital radio.
