Germany's Audio Digitisation report 2021 reveals DAB+ is booming

Germany's annual Audio Digitisation Report 2021 published this week reveals that the number of DAB+ radios in German households has risen by more than 5 million to almost 22 million within the last year, corresponding to a relative annual growth of 30 percent. The number of FM radios continues to fall.

A new report just published shows that with DAB+, the energy consumption when broadcasting a single programme is significantly lower than with FM. Bayerischer Rundfunk would save around 75% of energy per programme if it only broadcast its programmes via DAB+, and Antenne Bayern would save around 85% for its programmes. Other providers in Germany come up with a similar savings potential.

Swiss radio industry reverts to original date for FM switch off

Swiss radio broadcasters have decided to switch off FM transmitters on 31 December 2024. By reverting to the original switch off date, listeners have more time to upgrade their radios. Overall, around three quarters of radio listeners have gone digital, mostly via DAB+. Only 14 percent still listen exclusively on FM.

Deutschlandradio drives DAB+ network expansion

The transmitter network for the first national DAB+ multiplex will gradually increase with six new locations from April 2022. New DAB + stations are to be switched on in the coming year In Schleswig-Holstein (Hennstedt), Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Güstrow, Torgelow), Brandenburg (Petkus), Baden-Württemberg (Reutlingen) and Bavaria (Pfaffenhoffen).

Switzerland will switch off FM end 2024

Swiss radio broadcasters have decided to shut down FM as originally planned on 31 December 2024, according to a press release published by Digimig, the Swiss broadcaster working group on digital migration. On the same date, FM radio licences expire. From that date onwards, radio programmes will no longer be broadcast via FM. With the return to the original switch-off date, consumers have more time to switch technology.

DAB+ in NRW strengthened with new appointment

Media company TEUTOCAST has been strengthened with the appointment of Jan-Uwe Brinkmann. Thanks to DAB+, NRW now has a diverse programme landscape with an attractive advertising inventory. TEUTOCAST aims to combine the power of of its nationwide marketing team, established national programmes FEMOTION RADIO, dpd DRIVER'S RADIO and SPORTRADIO DEUTSCHLAND as well as two new, regional radio offers. Said CEO Erwin Linnenbach: "This is a blueprint for the introduction of nationwide special-interest programmes related to the state - and with RAUDIO a completely new cross-media marketing genre."
