Digital listening exceeds 50%: what happens next?

It’s finally happened – digital now accounts for more than half of radio listening. The Q1 RAJAR figures revealed that the share of all radio listening via a digital platform now stands at 50.9% - up from 47.2% a year earlier. Five years ago, it was just 34.3%. DAB digital radio now accounts for 36.8% of listening and has a 72% share of digital listening hours.

Radio stations in Lower Bavaria, Upper Palatinate and Allgäu going digital

The Bavarian Center for New Media (BLM) has allocated new DAB+ capacities for private broadcasters in Lower Bavaria, the Upper Palatinate and the Allgäu regions. Station Oldie Radio Niederbayern has been assigned additional capacity in Block 7D, with the service to go to air from July. In the Upper Palatinate, Radio Charivari Regensburg will have their new DAB+ capacity available from 3 July. For Allgäu, the local FM and cable radio programmes can now be distributed via a regional DAB+ network Allgäu simulcast.

RAJAR Q1 2018: 50% of radio listening is now digital

Digital listening has reached a new record share of 50.9% – a landmark achievement for the industry which hopes will trigger action from the Government about the future of DAB. Overall, digital listening hours grew by 7.8% compared to Q1 2017. The greatest amount of digital listening takes place on a DAB radio which now accounts for 36.8% of all listening and 72.2% of digital listening, with hourly growth of 8.9% year on year.

Digital radio switchover target of 50% listening share reached

Majority of radio listening now digital

Digital listening in the UK has reached a record share of 50.9%, up from 47.2% a year ago, to account for the majority of listening for the first time, following the release of RAJAR Q1 data today. With the 50% digital listening threshold now met, it is anticipated the Government will undertake a review to assess digital radio progress and determine next steps. Minister of State for Digital and Creative Industries Margot James said reaching 50% was an important milestone, and that the government would make further announcements after consultations with all partners in the radio and broadcasting industries.
