Prospective broadcaster Mobile TV will expand its trial network using Korea’s digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) technology, to the Western Cape and the Free State, founder Mothobi Mutloatse said on Wednesday. Mobile TV has already run a trial using DMB — which offers radio and video broadcasting services along with interactive “datacasting” — in Gauteng. It switched on test signals in the province in December 2010.

During a Southern Cross Austereo briefing,CEO Rhys Holleran highlighted new digital radio initiatives would be undertaken and that he considers digital radio an investment for the future of radio. “You've got to start somewhere… we want to be in the game, digital radio is a good game to be in for the future.”

The DDR-47BT is an FM, DAB, and DAB radio. It has built-in Bluetooth, so it can easily communicate with smartphones and tablet computers. It will stream using an Apt-x codec, giving it an affinity to Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and other devices that use Apt-x.
