In the run up to Christmas Eve visitors of to the website digitalradio.de can open a virtual door each day until the 24th December and have a chance to win one of 30 digital radio receivers. Well-known manufacturers have provided a wide range of models for the competition.

MobileTV, which has been running trials for three years, is set to finally go live with its offerings in April, but not on a handheld device as it has yet to receive a licence. The company was this week granted additional trial licences by the Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) to test the Korean Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) technology in East London, Port Elizabeth, and the Durban, Pietermaritzburg areas.

The Vauxhall Insignia comes with DAB as standard.

“Some people believe it is possible to replace broadcast radio with radio via cellular networks. Surely, they have not done the math. I have done the math and the conclusion is clear – it is not a realistic alternative,” says Göran Hedström, senior consultant at A-Focus and primary author of the report.The report, “Can the cellular networks cope with linear radio broadcasting?”, lists several arguments for why it is not a credible alternative.

The entry level S grade features DAB digital radio as standard

The Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) has granted two additional licences to the Mobile TV consortium to test mobile television using a South Korean system in towns which include East London and Durban.

Once again, the mid-20th century designs of Braun and in particular, Dieter Rams, are the inspiration for this audio unit. As for functionality, you get DAB, DAB+ and FM reception, along with Bluetooth support for wireless streaming from your Bluetooth-enabled phone or device and at CD quality where applicable.

If the targeted penetration is not achieved in 2016 and it is not yet clear whether this will be achieved within a few years, all permits will be redistributed and FM continues after 2023.

Digitisation of radio is probably the biggest challenge faced by the media over the coming years.
