Listen2Digital, one of the two bidders for the second national commercial digital multiplex, has received the public support of private equity firm LDC. Phil Riley, Chairman of Orion Media said: “It’s great to see LDC, one of the UK’s leading private equity firms, publicly backing our bid for a second national DAB multiplex. LDC has longstanding and continued involvement with Orion Media, and I’m delighted they are committed to supporting Listen2Digital and the future of radio.”

Pop-up stations are made possible because new platforms, like DAB Digital Radio and the internet all offer the opportunity to dynamically add and remove stations. More and more countries are therefore trying out pop-up services.

The Minister for Economic Affairs has spoken of his commitment to have new more cars equipped with DAB+ as standard. In a final session at last week’s Digital Broadcasting Symposium, a panel of experts looked at monetising new digital developments. In the same session, Les Sabel talked about the opportunities to monetise digital radio transmissions, using a combination of IP and broadcast technologies. “Digital radio gives stations the opportunity to broadcast more channels, bringing new revenue streams,” he said.

From 15 March new DAB+ stations are available in the south west region of The Netherlands. This is first of several regional DAB+ networks that are being constructed across the country. In the upcoming months, more regional DAB+ networks are due to be switched on.

More automotive OEMs are offering digital radios as standard equipment in new cars. Honda, for example, has announced that European models, from the model year 2015 and on, will be outfitted with DAB radios and smartphone connect features.

Regional public and commercial broadcasters in the Netherlands will soon begin broadcasting on DAB+. The broadcasts will begin on 15 March in 9D (South West Netherlands) and will launch in phases.

In Italy, a a new consortia has been established called “Umbria DAB” comprising of 12 local radio stations. Three other new consortia are being established in the Umbria region and Torino.
