The ARD is committed to the digitisation of German radio and the public broadcaster driving the digitisation of radio by planning further DAB+ programs. This is detailed in their latest financial report.

“I do not dare say that DAB+ is the successor to FM. It’s still too early. As long as data capacity is scarce I don’t expect radio via mobile internet will be a success.” said Broadcast Partners Director Robert-Jan van der Hoeven.

Two of the UK’s leading broadcast technology businesses, Factum Radioscape and All in Media (AIM), have announced a licensing, development and partnership deal for RAPID, the digital radio visual content software. Chris Gould, CEO, AIM; said “We are looking forward to working with Factum Radioscape’s global network of broadcast customers to highlight the visual content capabilities of DAB/DAB+..."

Ford Switzerland is supporting DAB+ digital radio, and has been partnering MCDT since July of this year. From the autumn, almost all models will be available with high-quality Sony DAB+ radios as standard.

In Germany, 10% of households now own a DAB+ radio. These figures were announced at the IFA technology trade fair in Berlin, Germany. The figures also show that 1.9 million cars in Germay are equipped with DAB+ reception.

Interestingly, the second-most popular DAB+ only station is Coles radio—a station designed to be used in the more than 750 supermarkets that Coles has in the Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide. Listeners can also hear the station as they drive away from the store. Coles radio attracts about 140,000 listeners per week.

The new small scale DAB trial multiplex for London, operated by UDAB, is now testing from one of its two transmission sites in the capital. Once fully launched the multiplex, which is broadcasting on VHF Block 9A will cover Central London out to the A406 North Circular Road and A205 South Circular Road. In the meantime, the test transmissions cover a smaller area.

This year is only the second attendance of VQ at IFA, but a lot has happened in 12 months, the independently owned British brand is taking the world by storm with DAB Radio’s designed with Sound & Style at their core.
