From 2020 until 2024 at the latest, DAB + (Digital Audio Broadcasting) will replace analogue FM reception. In addition to noise-free reception and a broader selection of programs, digital radio listening offers other advantages for listeners.

Creature comforts such as heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry/keyless go, a reversing camera, cruise control and an electronic parking brake are all included. The authorities in the Italian region of South Tyrol have approved FM shutdown and will start on 5 December. The reason is that the DAB coverage is 99.3 percent and meets the requirements for outdoor and indoor coverage.

The first FM stations will be released in Italy this year. It concerns support stations at six locations in the province of South Tyrol. In November 2018 another seven locations will follow. According to the RAS, owner of the channels, many listeners have already switched to DAB +, which means that FM can go out.

Since the DAB transmission networks of the RAS reach 99.3 percent of the South Tyrol population, the South Tyrolean state government has approved the plan for FM shutdown.
