Renewed interest in DAB+ in Vietnam

Government representatives joined the broadcasting sector of Vietnam to learn more about DAB+ international progress, the latest technical developments, and how DAB+ can be further developed in Vietnam.

Hosted by public broadcaster the Voice of Vietnam (VoV) in Hanoi this week, more than 30 high-level delegates were in attendance, including VoV President Nguy?n Th? K?. WorldDAB was represented by Jørn Jensen of Norwegian broadcaster NRK, who is also past President of WorldDAB.

DAB+ trials were initially conducted in Hanoi in 2013 and VoV are now working on a project aimed to extend national digital radio by 2020.

Delegates were particularly interested in Dr Jensen’s presentations on the lessons learnt from Norway after it switched off national FM in 2017, as well as the overall progress of DAB+ around the world. The workshop took place to address the needs of the Vietnamese broadcasting sector and aimed to help inform the government about the country’s digital potential.

Delegates spoke of how DAB+ will meet the country’s needs, especially related to emergency warnings. Representatives from technology providers Paneda (Anupon Tajawanno) and GatesAir (Alex Ng) also presented at the workshop.  Paneda addressed the headend system which they have deployed in Hanoi, while GatesAir spoke on how the transition to DAB+ would be cost-efficient.
