Digital Radio Network expands with Radioseven
24.09.2009 - Teracom AB - Sweden
Radioseven is the tenth channel in the digital radio network. The web-broadcast channel will be included as a part of an upcoming pilot project with digital radio that starts in the autumn. “We are looking forward to the pilot and hope that a digitalization of radio in Sweden will be able to increase the selection and variety in Swedish radio in the same way the TV market has been enriched through the introduction of digital terrestrial broadcasts,” says Mikael Andersson, station manager of Radioseven. The transmissions are a collaboration between broadcast companies and Teracom. The aim is to explore what listeners think about the expanded content and additional services that digital radio offers. The pilot transmissions will also enable broadcast companies to evaluate quality, content and services before an upcoming roll-out of digital radio. Currently public service company Sveriges Radio broadcasts four channels with med DAB+ on the digital pilot network over the Stockholm area. These are SR P2 Musik, SR P3, SR P4 Stockholm and SR Metropol. In addition, six other private radio channels are broadcast digitally - these channels are RIX FM, BANDIT, Radio Deejay and Archipelago Radio, the Dance Band Channel and now also Radioseven. In addition to the greater Stockholm area, there will also be transmissions in Gävle and Uppsala when the transmissions begin. They will be able to be received by chosen listeners that are part of the pilot. “We want to show the possibility of getting a substantially bigger and more versatile selection of real radio compared to what it looks like in many places in Sweden today. Therefore we are happy that more and more broadcast companies and channels are choosing to join the pilot,” says Lotta Darlin, Press Officer at Teracom. In a future digital radio network public service, community radio and commercial channels will get space. The technology that will be used is DAB +. During the autumn, several channels will join the pilot broadcasts. Radioseven Radioseven originally started in 1999 as one of Sweden’s first pure Internet stations. Today Radioseven is Sweden’s largest Internet-based radio station and is still growing. In 2006 the station was awarded with the Swedish Radio Academy’s special prize, the Gold Ear (Guldörat).
