Archipelago Radio broadcasts digitally
17.09.2009 - Teracom AB - Sweden
This week Skärgårdsradion (Archipelago Radio), a radio station in the Stockholm area, is set to begin transmitting digitally. The transmissions are a part of a digital radio pilot project which will be launched this autumn. Trials to test digital radio broadcasts will start in autumn 2009. One of the channels to be included in the experiment is Skärgårdsradion (Archipelago Radio) that also broadcasts regularly over the FM band in the Stockholm area. “We look forward to taking part in the experimental broadcasts and a future digitisation of radio, "says Martin Loogna, station manager at Archipelago Radio. The transmissions are a collaboration between broadcast companies and Teracom. The aim, among other things, is to explore what listeners think about the expanded content and additional services that digital radio offers. The pilot transmissions will also enable broadcast companies to evaluate quality, content and services before an upcoming roll-out of digital radio. Currently Sveriges Radio broadcasts four channels on the digital pilot network over the Stockholm area. These are SR P2 Musik, SR P3, SR P4 Stockholm and SR Metropol. In addition, four other private radio channels are broadcast digitally - these channels are RIX FM, BANDIT, Radio Deejay and Archipelago Radio. Several more channels will be added before the pilot transmissions begin. When the pilots begin, broadcasts will occur in Gävle and Uppsala in addition to greater Stockholm. These will be able to be received by selected listeners who are part of the pilot transmission. “We will present in the pilots a range from public service and community radio, as well as commercial radio. We want to show the possibility of having a much larger and more diverse selection of real radio compared to what it looks like in a great deal of Sweden today" says Lotta Darlin, Press Officer at Teracom. In a future digital radio network public service, community radio and commercial channels will get more space. The technology that will be used is DAB +. During autumn 2009, several channels will join the pilot broadcasts.
