Q&A with William Kim, Technical Director, RF2Digital

RF2 Digital recently joined WorldDAB as a member. Could you please explain the main reason for joining?

RF2Digital has built a competitive SDR-based digital radio solution and is providing the solution to our customers.

As the DAB market expands, the DAB trend is developing faster than ever before. In addition to existing analogue broadcasting, DAB provides services linked to the hybrid network. We believe that new additional services will be developed and released to the listeners as 5G develops, combining the benefits of both DAB and connectivity.

We think that WorldDAB membership is a great opportunity for us to follow up on the DAB growth trend.

What markets do your company support and what solutions do you provide?

RF2Digital provides an automotive-qualified true software-defined-radio (SDR) solution "α-Infuser™" for all global digital radio standards on IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) system.

The α-Infuser™ supports all existing digital radio standards such as DAB /DAB+/DMB, DRM (for both AM and VHF bands), CDR, ISDB-Tsb, HD radio, and even RDS as well.

As a true SDR solution, "α-Infuser™" is the independent solution from a processor, architecture, tuner, physical interface. Also, it can be executed in multiple instances to provide enriched reception features or multi-reception to the system and the user.

"α-Infuser™" can create multiple different digital standard tuner instances at the same time without any firmware loading, without any external decoder solution.

The "α-Infuser™" not only satisfies all automotive requirements but also provides better performance than existing solutions.

Can you tell us about your most recent projects?

SDR-based solutions are being considered in the automotive industry only recently. Therefore, our company is working on PoC (Proof of Concept) projects with many OEM and Tier 1s. We are proud to announce that RF2Digital's participation in a European OEM's mass production project has recently been confirmed.

What do your customers value most from your solutions?

Our customers believe that RF2Digital 's SDR-based solution has advanced and has excellent cost efficiency and flexibility.

The key advantage for the listener from α-Infuser™ is the fastest Time-to-Audio and full scan time for the best user experience. It has the best reception fading performance among all available solutions; therefore, the radio listener can have a better user experience with α-Infuser™.

Another key advantage for OEMs and Tier1s is that the α-Infuser™ has the most affordable price and it can be ported on various system H/W configuration easily. Therefore, it shall ensure that the shortest and least R&D time and effort, so it will provide the BOM cost and engineering cost advantages

"α-Infuser™" is very flexible as it is based on SDR. If a new service feature is added, the customer could adapt it easily with "α-Infuser™"

What advice would you give someone considering deploying DAB?

I believe the SDR solution will be a big trend in the future for the automotive industry.
Our true SDR solution "α-Infuser™", which is advanced, cost-effective, flexible, and tested in a real variety field environment, provides the best user experience solution. So "α-Infuser™" is definitely worth your attention.
