Q&A with André Smidt, Senior Manager, Panasonic Automotive Systems Europe

What markets does your company support and what solutions do you provide?

I'd like to introduce my great team, the Global Tuner Core team which is part of Panasonic Automotive Systems Europe (PASEU). We provide radio receiver solutions globally for worldwide Panasonic Automotive car infotainment products. Over the past 10 years, we have gained high radio expertise and we delivered many product solutions for a large variety of different car OEMs. We have a mass production proven solution for all markets, European, North American, India, Japanese and the rest of the world. With our extensive field test rides and recordings in Europe and US (70+) we prepare our solution for a wide range of RF situations.

Can you tell us about your most recent projects?

Together with radio partners RadioPlayer and RadioLine we create a state-of-the-art hybrid radio experience by bringing in our extensive knowledge on broadcast radio. In addition, we are developing our Android Automotive Broadcast HAL compatible solution. One of the big innovations we are working on is the delivery of a software-only automotive product: Radio Tuner SDK (Software Development Kit). It’s a platform component, which can be used across different hardware, at different requirements levels (entry, mid, high) and in different regions, as it supports all relevant broadcast standards (AM - FM, DAB, HD Radio and DRM) and their related data services.

What do your customers value most from your solutions?

We provide a mass production proven software library and we provide vehicle optimised quality. Radio Tuner SDK is portable on various OEM-specific hardware, and is easily adaptable to new BSP and OS due to abstraction layers and supports most popular car radio tuner SoCs. Our solution reduces development time by allowing early prototyping / optimisation (even if final HMI is not available) with our own GUI for rapid prototyping. One of the biggest advantages is probably the high compatibility with Android Automotive, which does not come with a built-in radio component. Finally, we shall not forget the support of Software Defined Radio (SDR).

What advice would you give someone considering deploying DAB?

Get a solution which is already mass production proven and is prepared to support hybrid radio and Android Automotive. Combine all reception technologies to ensure the best user experience.
