Q&A with Nick Piggott, Project Director, RadioDNS

What markets does your company support and what solutions do you provide?

RadioDNS is the global not-for-profit membership organisation that sets standards for hybrid radio, the seamless combination of broadcast radio and internet connectivity. RadioDNS Hybrid Radio enhances broadcast radio with additional metadata and content delivered directly over IP, using open standard technology supported by broadcasters and automotive manufacturers globally. It’s free to use RadioDNS and we are continually promoting, demonstrating and working with our technology group to create solutions and striving to make hybrid radio better for everyone.

Can you tell us about your most recent projects?

Project Logo is our project to get the world’s broadcasters to provide useful metadata (names, logos, genre information, streaming information) in open-standards, so that manufacturers can use it to make better user experiences of broadcast radio. We have broadcasters across Europe, North America and Australia providing metadata, and it’s already used in Audi, VW, BMW and Porsche vehicles.

Alongside Project Logo, we’re developing a standard template agreement on how metadata will be provided and used, so that everyone has surety that they are acting fairly.

For our members, we’re improving our tools for testing and debugging and reporting problems in hybrid radio.

What do your customers value most from your solutions?

Standards for exchanging metadata over IP between radio stations and radio devices. It provides a direct connection to acquire authentic and accurate metadata.

What advice would you give someone considering deploying DAB?

DAB+ has unique attributes that cannot be replicated by analogue hybrid radio. Only DAB+ can give you the capacity to deliver more variety of radio stations to listeners, and only DAB+ can be more economical than analogue radio. RadioDNS can supplement DAB+ to add even more functionality.
