The 19th session of the Arab Radio and TV Festival

 

The Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) organizes the 19th edition of the Arab Radio and Television Festival from April 26 to 29, 2018 in the City of Culture in Tunis. The Festival is organized in cooperation with the Tunisian Radio and Tunisian Television Establishments and in partnership with the Arab Satellite Communications Organization (Arabsat)

The annual festival aims to achieve several objectives, including contributing to the development of the Arab radio and TV production and enhancing its quality so as to meet the aspirations of member corporations and reflect the principles that underpin their work. The Festival aims also to identify and encourage innovative and meaningful trends in radio and television production in order to develop Arab creative energies in this field.

The Festival welcomes the participation of representatives of ASBU member corporations, working in the fields of staging, production and preparation of programs, as well as representatives of private Arab production companies, news agencies, and foreign Arab- speaking radio and TV stations. Representatives of private radio and television networks, international radio and television unions will also attend the Festival.

Guests of Honor and honored figures: the Festival welcomes a variety of the Arab screen most prominent stars, artists, directors, high officials, and distinguished media landscape professionals.

 

Mainly, the festival includes the following events :

  • Opening and closing ceremonies: Two high standard music evening shows by most famous Arab artists. They are broadcast live by various TV and radio channels, both public and private.
  • The main competition is dedicated to TV programs and news produced by ASBU active member and participant corporations.
  • The parallel competition is dedicated to programs and news produced by private Arab television networks (non ASBU members), Arab production companies and news agencies, as well as foreign Arabic-speaking satellite channels.
  • The Radio program competition, both main and parallel. The competition is dedicated to radio programs and news produced by ASBU member corporations, as regards the official competition. The parallel competition will witness the participation of private Arab radio stations and companies and international Arabic-speaking production companies. The radio program competition includes in turn five categories of radio programs and news.
  • Two workshops, one technical and one related to programs.
  • ASBU TV and Radio Convention : it consists of a TV and radio equipment exhibition, which introduces new technological developments and innovations and a TV and radio program market organized with the participation of member corporations, private TV and radio networks, Arab production companies and news agencies and foreign Arabic-speaking stations..
  • Festival’s Prizes: Prizes and certificates of appreciation are awarded to programs and newsreports winning the first and second places in each category of television and radio programs and news competitions.
Cash prizes, as well, are awarded to some categories of radio and television programs and news shows, alternating from one session to the other.

Participation in the festival competitions

Competitions among the various types of radio and television production represent the basis of the Arab Radio and Television Festival in order to promote the Arab audiovisual production and develop it in terms of quantity and quality, improve its forms and contents and provide the required technical and creative specifications. These competitions include several sections and categories as follows:

Radio programs Competitions

It is a competition dedicated to radio programs and news produced by the member corporations of ASBU, Arab private radio stations, foreign Arabic speaking stations and broadcasters, production companies and Arab news agencies.

Competition fees (for private channels, production companies and news agencies)

Participation in news and parallel program radio competitions is charged a fee of US$100 per category.

Categories of the main radio program competition

Type Duration

Interactive Programs : consist of the audience’s efficient participation in creating programs during which they suggest the programs’ topics and ideas; they exchange opinions, expertise and roles. Lengthy episodes are abridged and combined through editing and montage to fit into a 15-minute span.

 

No more than 15 minutes

Programs for the physically or mentally impaired : Programs that deal with the issues, hopes and aspirations of physically or mentally impaired people in the aim of facilitating decent livelihoods and integrating them in society, fully and with no discrimination.
It is preferable that individuals with special needs participate in making their own programs.

Sports Programs: (Sports Studio) Programs that assist in discussing and understanding the details of sports games, the correct application of their rules and plans and the major strengths and weaknesses of sports teams and their adversaries. These programs will also help in staying up to date to enable a good understanding of these games and an accurate prediction, through these data, of plans and counter-plans to score a win.

Awareness-raising advertisements/ flashes Short clips to raise awareness in various domains (health-related, environmental, educational, behavioral, traffic-related, economic, developmental, etc.…)

Newscast A news bulletin (local and global; not including any political analyses or comments)

Youth Program (The Inventors) Programs introducing young individuals who made scientific discoveries and inventions. Their achievements are celebrated, and they are presented as role-models for young listeners.

The Radio documentary (On the Palestinian cause) A documentary on the Palestinian cause and the Arab character of Jerusalem.

 

No more than 20 minutes

Arab media (Arab Innovators) A program on Arab innovators in different fields.

 

No more than 30 minutes

From an Arab perspective (Natural Reserves) A program presenting natural land and maritime reserves in the Arab world.

First prize: (USD 2,000 ) Two thousand American Dollars
Second prize: (USD 1,000) One thousand American Dollars
Prizes are awarded to the program team (producer, director and presenter) according to the jury's decision.

 

 

Prize money 

The prize money is allocated in the frame of the main radio program competition of the 19th session of the 2018 festival for the following two programs:

  • Programs for individuals with special needs (the physically or mentally impaired) in the aim of encouraging the production of a variety of programs related to this field.
  • Sports programs (Sports Studio)

This competition is in keeping up with the celebration of World Radio Day. Its theme for the year 2018 is “Radio and Sports.”

  • The first prize in every category: USD 3,000
  • The second prize in every category: USD 1,500
  • The prizes of the festival (except prizes of exchange) are given to committees.

A competition reserved for private Arab radio stations, Arabic-speaking international stations and radios, production companies and Arab news agencies.

Prize money

The two prizes, in the framework of the (parallel) radio program competition of the 19th session of the 2018 festival, are allocated for the category of the “awareness-raising sequences” for what it contributes to the community.

  • First prize: USD 2,000
  • Second prize: USD 1,000.
