EBU lunchtime talk - digital radio: tuning into the digital single market?
Radio remains a hugely popular and highly trusted media amongst Europeans in the digital age. So isn't it time for radio to become truly digital in the EU?
Digital radio broadcasting (DAB and DAB+) builds on the benefits of analog radio - free-to-air reception, ease of use and vast choice to name but a few – and adds improved sound quality, more efficient distribution, and access to multimedia content.
However, progress is inconsistent across Europe. While some countries are planning to go fully digital, others have yet to begin trials. Universal adoption would promote investment in technology, networks, services and devices, not only in the radio sector but also in the consumer electronics and car manufacturing sectors.
Could a European initiative be decisive in developing a strategy for digital radio? Could the review of the EU Telecoms Framework offer an opportunity to promote new digital radio standards? Our Lunchtime Talk will bring together leaders in the world of public service radio to address these questions and highlight what is needed to take the development of digital radio one step further in the EU.
The event is being held between 12:30 - 14:00 with a light lunch buffet
