Radio deregulation plans coming this year, says culture minister

Matt Hancock MP announced the plans at the Radio Festival, the radio industry’s annual conference, held in the British Library in London. The minister also announced he is looking at introducing legislation for the regulation of small-scale DAB multiplex services, following a trial by Ofcom. Services on DAB are free from any rules on providing local content. Ofcom was asked to consider how to create a level playing field for analogue and digital audio broadcasting radio services.

News Corp says there are significant opportunities to grow reach in the world of sport and entertainment, share talent and cross-promote brands with the new stations, but will run the company on a standalone basis.

The report shows that the recent 'small-scale DAB' trials in the UK were highly successful, highlighting that the technology worked well, the stations co-ordinated effectively with the multiplex licensees, and that there is significant demand from smaller radio stations to use DAB. Ofcom have also identified space in the airwaves that could support a UK-wide roll out of the technology, using spectrum bands previously occupied by business radio, paving the way for hundreds more stations to join the digital radio revolution

Ofcom recommends digital technology for small radio stations

Ofcom has thrown a lifeline to the local radio sector after approving the use of a new technology that allows tiny broadcasters to upgrade to digital at a fraction of the previous cost. Neil Stock, Ofcom’s director of Broadcast Licensing, said: “This technology could open up a new, local dimension in digital radio. We’re confident that a UK wide rollout of these stations would be technically possible and commercially viable.”
